Grated pure soap does the cleaning, washing soda softens water and lifts stains, and bicarb freshens. It's low-suds, so it's safe for front loaders. This is the recipe most people start with — and most never leave.
Method
- 1
Grate the soap as finely as you can — a food processor's grating disc is fastest. Fine soap dissolves; coarse soap leaves flecks.
- 2
Mix with the washing soda and bicarb. Add the essential oil and stir until there are no clumps.
- 3
Store in a sealed tub with a scoop.
How to use
- 2 tbsp per load (3 for heavy soil or hard water). Front loaders: put it straight into the drum, not the drawer.
- Cold washes: dissolve the powder in a cup of hot water first.
Tips
- Add ½ cup white vinegar to the softener compartment — it softens and keeps the machine fresh.
Safety
- Wear a mask when handling washing soda in bulk; the dust is irritating.
- Keep out of reach of children.
