Liquid castile soap is the backbone of most natural shampoos; coconut milk adds fat so it doesn't strip. The catch with soap-based shampoo is pH — soap is alkaline — so finish with the apple cider vinegar rinse from the conditioner section to close the cuticle and restore shine.
Method
- 1
Whisk coconut milk with glycerine and jojoba until smooth.
- 2
Gently stir in castile soap — do not whisk vigorously or you'll fill the bottle with foam.
- 3
Add essential oil, pour into the bottle, label with date.
How to use
- Shake well. Use a 20-cent coin amount for shoulder-length hair, massage into the scalp, rinse thoroughly.
- Follow with a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse — this is not optional with soap shampoos.
Tips
- Freeze leftover coconut milk in ice-cube trays for the next batch.
- Hard water? Soap shampoos can leave a film. Try the rhassoul wash instead.
Safety
- Keep out of eyes — castile stings.
